The first crew to live on the space station
October 31, 2000
On this day in 2000, three space travelers, Bill Shepherd, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, launched from Kazakhstan to become the first crew to live on the International Space Station. Two days later, they floated aboard and moved in.
Why it mattered
Ever since they arrived, there have always been people living in space, every single day.
Wonder together
If you lived on a space station, what's the first thing you'd want to look at out the window?
