On this night in science
The first rover on the Moon
November 17, 1970
On this day in 1970, a spacecraft landed on the Moon and rolled a robot car down a ramp onto the ground. It was called Lunokhod 1, and a small team back on Earth steered it, watching through its cameras.
Why it mattered
It was the first rover ever to drive on another world. It was built to last three months, and it kept exploring for eleven.
Wonder together
If you could drive a little robot car on the Moon, where would you steer it first?
