On this night in science
A whole continent set aside for science
December 1, 1959
On this day in 1959, twelve countries signed an agreement called the Antarctic Treaty. They promised that Antarctica, the icy continent at the bottom of the world, would be used only for peaceful purposes, and that scientists from every country could study it freely and share what they found.
Why it mattered
Antarctica is still a place for peace and science today, with researchers from many countries working side by side in the cold.
Wonder together
