On this night in science
The last Moon landing, so far
December 11, 1972
On this day in 1972, astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt landed in a valley on the Moon, while Ron Evans circled overhead. Schmitt was a geologist, the first scientist to walk on the Moon, and the two of them spent three days exploring and collecting rocks.
Why it mattered
They were the last people to walk on the Moon, so far. The rocks they brought home are still being studied today.
Wonder together
If you were the next person to walk on the Moon, what would you want to find?
