Earthrise

December 24, 1968

On this day in 1968, while circling the Moon on Apollo 8, astronaut Bill Anders looked out the window and saw the Earth rising over the Moon's gray horizon. He took a quick picture in black and white, then loaded color film and took the photograph now known as Earthrise.

Why it mattered

It showed our whole home as a small, bright world in the dark, with the Moon's empty ground in front of it. Many people say it changed how they thought about looking after the Earth.

Wonder together

If you were standing on the Moon, how do you think the Earth would look in its sky?
