Cassini's portrait of Jupiter
December 30, 2000
On this day in 2000, the Cassini spacecraft made its closest pass by Jupiter, on its long way to Saturn. It took thousands of pictures, and some of them were stitched together into the most detailed color portrait of Jupiter anyone had made.
Why it mattered
Jupiter's pull also gave Cassini a push, speeding it on toward Saturn, where it arrived three and a half years later.
Wonder together
If you could paint Jupiter's stripes, which colors would you use?
