The Bedtime Scientist

A question

What is the deepest place on Earth?

A calm, true answer. Then, if the wondering keeps going, the whole episode.

The short answer

The Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific. Its deepest point is nearly eleven kilometres down, deeper than Everest is tall. Drop the mountain in and it would vanish completely.

No storm reaches it. Whatever the surface is doing, the bottom stays still and dark and cold. And life is there anyway, soft and slow and pale.
