The Bedtime Scientist

A question

Where do feelings come from?

A calm, true answer. Then, if the wondering keeps going, the whole episode.

The short answer

From your brain and your body talking to each other. A feeling is partly a thought and partly something physical: a fast heart, a tight stomach, warm cheeks.

That is why excitement and worry can feel so alike. The same racing heart wears both coats, and part of what your brain is doing is deciding which one it is. Saying the name of a feeling out loud genuinely calms the brain's alarm centres, which is why talking about it helps.
