The Giant Ship That Floats
A ship can be as heavy as a mountain and still ride on top of the sea, as though the water had been waiting to hold it up. This episode is about the quiet bargain a ship makes with the ocean, and why it is the water, not the ship, doing all of the work.
The science, gently
- Anything you put into water pushes some water aside, and the water presses back upward exactly as hard as the water that moved weighs. That upward push is called buoyancy.
- The same steel that would sink straight down as a solid block will float once it is shaped into a hollow hull, because the whole shape, air and all, pushes aside far more water than the ship weighs.
- The largest ships are the largest moving things people have ever made. One can be as long as four soccer fields, with a propeller taller than a house, and sailors paint a mark on the hull to show how deep it may safely sit.
