What causes the northern lights?

Particles from the Sun, meeting our air. The Sun is always throwing off a thin stream of charged particles, and Earth's magnetic field steers them toward the poles.

High above the ground they strike gases in our atmosphere and make them glow, the way current makes a neon sign glow. Oxygen tends to give green, and nitrogen adds the blues and purples.
