The Bedtime Scientist

A question

What is inside an ant hill?

A calm, true answer. Then, if the wondering keeps going, the whole episode.

The short answer

Rooms and tunnels, and the ring of dirt on top is what used to fill them. Every crumb was carried up one grain at a time and set down at the surface, so the mound is really the nest turned inside out.

No ant is in charge, and none of them has a plan. How deep a room sits changes how warm it gets, and in some kinds of ants the workers carry the eggs and the young from room to room, toward whichever one suits them best at that hour.
